FAQ All your questions answered
Q. What if I don't have any experience teaching, can I still be accepted?
A. If you are applying from overseas you may have difficulty seeking employment if you do not qualify for the working visa. We recommend coming to China and attending our free morning training session to prepare you for interviews in Guangzhou, China. On the other hand, if you do qualify for a working visa (BA Degree + 2 years working experience) and are accepted via a Skype interview online, your school will offer some help and training as you start your contract.
Q. Should I come to China and they try to look for work?
A. If you would like access to all the positions we have a Find Work Abroad we recommend you come to China looking for work. This is mainly because many, if not all schools in China want to see you before they will offer a contract. Usually, the best schools hold an in person interview, which of course offer the highest pay. If you know a date in the future when you'll be coming to China, do contact our staff before hand and we'll be happy to set up a day of interviews for you.
Q. What will I have to pay for?
A. Our service as an agency is free, however all costs to get you to interview and living before your first pay check are your responsibility, Coming from overseas; expect to pay for your flights: £450 to £550, Your TEFL course if you're not already qualified: £210, Chinese visa £90 (+Z Visa medical cost: 300-400£), fully comprehensive travel insurance: £150, transfers: £50 and any additional living expenses or transportation costs for your first month of employment before your first pay check.
Q. When will I recieve my first pay check?
A. You will be paid monthly and your first pay check will be paid at the end of your first month, so you'll need to bring enough money to live for 1 month in China, we recommend a minimum of £300
Q. Will I be safe in China?
A. China is one of the safest countries I have ever visited. However make sure you keep your valuables well hidden and be aware of pick pockets on the metro, in shopping centres and clubs. Apart from that you'll never feel threatened on the streets, even at night.
Q. How long after I complete my application will it take to be accepted?
A. We will review submitted applications within 24 hours and attempt to locate work for you immediately. If we can find work for you quickly you will be immediately accepted. If it takes longer we will let you know. For applications we reject we will immediately inform you of this.
Q. Why would my application be rejected?
A. For a number of reasons, mainly if the application is completed incorrectly or with not enough detail. We will also review your application based on how successful we believe you will be as a teacher. Note that any previous experience with working with children, teaching in any sort, drama, communications and public speaking are all very valuable to your application so please keep this in mind.
Q. What happens once i'm accepted?
A. Firstly, you will be required to attend an interview or prepare for a Skype interview online. Find Work Abroad will help you prepare and arrange a suitable time for interview. Following your successful interview you will recieve a contract via email and directions to apply for your working (Z) visa in China. Once you've accepted the job offer and signed your contract, prepared your documents and receieved your (Z) Visa you will need to book your flight, pay your insurance. You'll then be all set to come out to China.
Q. Where should I fly to?
A. We are located in Guangzhou, China but it is usually cheaper and there are more flights to Hong Kong. Hong Kong is roughly 2 hours transfer to Guangzhou city with convenient buses from the airport direct to the city. You do not need to pre-arrange a visa for Hong Kong.
Q. Is it difficult working conditions, how does it compare to the UK?
A. If you work in a private institute you will notice a big difference to the government operated schools. In a private institute expect white boards, air conditioning and good teaching materials, perhaps a projector and computer in the classroom. Most government run schools are relitavely basic, you will sometimes have a blackboard and chalk to work with, some classrooms may not have air conditioning. This can be difficult to work with at times so be prepared for this.
Q. What is the level of english in the City, will I be able to live without speaking Chinese?
A. It will be a challenge, don't expect a large number of people to speak good English although many will be happy to help as much as they can. You will be able to live without speaking Chinese but I highly recommend you try as much as you can to learn Chinese. It took me about 3 months before I could start communicating on a basic level, enough to order dinner in a restaurant, ask how much the taxi fare was and barter in the market
Q. What if I want to leave during my contract?
A. You can do this but you will be in breach of your contract with the school. It will depend on the contract and the school as to the terms of contract termination and you will be required to adhere to these rules.
Q. Can I change schools if i'm not happy?
A. If you're not enjoying it you must tell us as soon as possible and we'll try to change your school for you, note this is a term of employment and although we aim for you to enjoy it, it can be hard work and this should be expected before you signup. If we can change your school we might be able to pay for your flight home at the end of the contract but this depends on the agreement we can make with the school
